Budget and Furlough Updates
SDSU has released a budget update. In the update, there is mention that "SDSU has not renewed the employment of over 700 temporary employees; all such non-renewals are complete." According to Jessica Rentto, the majority of these are lecturers. Aproximately 29 temporary employees in units 2, 5, 7 and 9 were not renewed.
The Notification of Furlough was sent to employees in units 2, 5, 7 and 9 today via email. Please be sure to share this with your coworkers in those units. HR sent the notice to all unit 2, 5, 7 and 9 employees that they had an email address for. More detailed information will be distributed soon.
Furlough Ratification Results July 21, 2009
You have all been asking about the Furlough Agreement ratification votes (complete tally). In summary it passed overwhelmingly, with the SDSU count at 71% YES and 29% NO with a 75% voter turn-out and with the Statewide count at 81% YES and 19% NO with a 65% voter turnout. For the first time SDSU is well over 50% membership. Fifty-nine new members joined on the day of the ratification vote.
There is a lot happening at the Trustees meeting at the Chancellor's Office in Long Beach today. Students will be protesting an anticipated 20% increase in fees over what was passed earlier bringing the total for 2009-10 to a 32% increase over the last year. Pat Gantt, CSUEU President, will be addressing the Trustees regarding our situation and the sacrifices our members are making. The Chancellor will be detailing his plans to the Trustees. The public comment sections are scheduled at 11 AM for the Collective Bargaining committee where Pat will report on the ratification and at 2 PM for the plenary session in the open meeting.

The California State Budget may finally be approved. It does not look good for higher education funding. More than ever we will need to band together during this time of fiscal crisis.
What CSUEU is doing:
We work to vigorously enforce the Contract and the the Furlough Agreement.
We will establish a SDSU CSUEU Labor Management Committee (LMC) to track implementation of the furlough process and follow-up on employee issues.
Our local LMC will feed information to the Statewide LMC's to enure that issues are resolved at the highest levels and our suggestions for cost cutting are heard.
We are attempting to set-up a meeting with President Weber to provide input and learn how he plans on implementing furloughs at SDSU. There is no official information until the President has made his announcement. According to the agreement employees must receive 21 days notice on the implementation.
We are here to meet your needs. Please contact the LMC if you are having concerns regarding furloughs once they go into effect (i.e. workload, use of student assistants, scheduling issues, etc.),
What you can do:
Contact the LMC with ideas on cost savings that should be considered and especially those that can be passed on to the Statewide LMC. Please look for future announcements on how to contact the LMC.
Help your co-workers by becoming a trained Steward.
Encourage your co-workers who are not members to join the union today.
Become an activist, volunteer to help.
Please visit the CSUEU local chapter website http://www.atwork.sdsu.edu for further information. CSUEU has posted an FAQ on their web site at http://www.csueu.org/.
In Solidarity,
Mark Flahan, President

CSUEU provides easy way to contact Legislators
The CSUEU web pages now have links that will allow you to send a fax or email directly to the governor or your state legislator from their web site. If you go to the CSUEU home page choose the link on the right labeled Contact your Legislators. This will take you to the State Worker Action Center where several choices are available along with a search to find your legislator if you do not know who they are.
Steward training
If you have any interest in this important function send an email to stewards@atwork.sdsu.edu indicating your interest. Training has been scheduled for August 21 and 22. Any CSUEU member can become a steward. Attendence at both training sessions is mandatory to become a steward. You will need to take a vacation day for the Friday training. Please RSVP to Tessy Reese via email or phone 619 594-7339 by Thursday August 13.
Chapter Executive Board Meetings
The Executive Board meets every month to cover chapter business. About once per quarter the entire community is invited to full chapter meetings to conduct business as needed and gather new information about contracts, labor management committees, etc. For more information see the Board page.
For a list of the chapter offices, the current representative and the duties of the office look at the chapter offices page.
Chapter Elections
Every two years the officers for your local chapter are elected for the next two year term. The next election cycle will be in 2011.
